Writing Goal And
Objective Statements

Goal Getting And The Habit Of Happiness

Welcome to the writing goal and objective statements page. This part of the web site is about psycho cybernetics - and in particular the vital impact that a negative or positive self image has on your success or failure in achieving goals you set.

The key issue of writing goal and objective statements is dealt with in CD 3 of The New Psycho-Cybernetics audio program.

Whilst the whole program is highly relevant for anyone seeking to achieve goals, this CD explains in a nutshell why most goals are not achieved.

It also covers what Maxwell Maltz called 'the habit of happiness'.

PART 5 - SETTING GOALS

Dr Maxell Maltz identified three common flaws in writing goal and objective statements.

First, many people set goals which they have no burning desire to achieve. The antidote is to develop and commit only to those goals that we sincerely desire.

Second is the problem of imprecision. It's important to set SMART goals, so that our self image is presented with a clear and detailed image of the target.

Third, we can only achieve goals which match our self image. So we may well need to work on our self image so that we see ourselves as 'the sort of person who achieves such a goal'.

Matching the goal to the self image is called 'goal congruency'. When writing goal and objective statements we need to include 'to be' goals as well as 'to do' goals in order to re-engineer our self image.

PART 6 - MENTAL PROSPERITY

Maxwell Maltz took the definition of happiness as being 'a state of mind in which our thinking is pleasant a good share of the time'. Happiness is important for goal achievement as it affects peak performance.

Dan Kennedy sets out seven strategies for staying happy. The first strategy, and maybe the most important, is to set goals. Psycho-cybernetics works on the basis that we humans are goal seekers by nature. We are happiest if we have a purpose in our life.

A second key point is that we may need to change some habits - or 'patterns of behaviour'. Maxwell Maltz said that our habits and our self image tend to go together. So if we want to develop a different self image we will need to change our habits.
