Tips For
Setting Goals

Welcome to the Setting Goals page. This web site is about setting and achieving personal goals. To see more goals articles please go to our achieve your personal goals or setting goals pages.

Goal setting sounds easy. But the way you go about setting your goals can make a huge difference to whether or not you achieve them.

Here are my three key pointers for goal setting:

SET ONE GOAL AT A TIME

You can have more than one goal running at the same time but start them one at a time. Then leave 30 days before you start your next goal.

Why?

Well, if you're really serious about achieving your personal goals you need to make sure you get each goal planned in detail, using the SMART goals formula, and headed in the right direction before diverting your attention.

After 30 days focused attention, working towards your goal should have become part of your daily routine.

BREAK DOWN YOUR GOAL INTO MINI-GOALS

One of the key problems in achieving goals comes when you set targets that are beyond what you really consider to be possible. For example, I find the thought of creating my first web-site quite daunting. But the idea of a mini-goal of creating a single page is much easier to tackle. In other words when setting personal goals also break them down into smaller bite-size mini-goals.

BREAK DOWN YOUR MINI-GOALS INTO TASKS

Even with a mini-goal you haven't worked out what you need to do today. So now you need to break your first mini-goal down into a list of individual tasks. For example, one of today's tasks might be to research my next web page. When you complete each task, cross it off your list and congratulate yourself.

Why is it useful to break down your goals to mini-goals and tasks?

First, you will only achieve your goal if you take action. When setting goals, breaking the goal down into mini-goals and then into tasks provides you with a list of actions you can take now.

Second, it gives you a feeling of control when you write down all these manageable tasks. You know that if you complete each task you have a great chance of achieving the goals you set.

Third, you can feel good every day as you cross off tasks and move towards your ultimate goal. Make sure to write down all the small tasks so you can enjoy crossing them off.

So how you go about setting goals is a vital part of achieving your goals.

Why Self Image is Vital to Success

If you're not aware why and how your subconscious beliefs can help or hinder your chances of achieving your personal goals, have a look at the teachings of Dr Maxwell Maltz on the importance of your self image.
