Overcoming Road Blocks
To Goal Achievement

Welcome to the Road Blocks to Goal Achievement page. This web site is about setting and achieving personal goals. To see more goals articles please go to our achieve your personal goals or setting goals pages.

Critical road blocks to goal achievement include lack of motivation, lack of persistence, and lack of time.

So what can you do about these obstacles?

The first point to realise is that most people will face obstacles when trying to achieve almost any goals they set. People who achieve their goals find a way to overcome the road blocks.

People who fail to achieve don't. There's no doubt that a certain amount of gritting your teeth is needed. However, you can make the job easier if you adopt certain thinking patterns and behaviour habits.

LACK OF MOTIVATION

Two of the road blocks to goal achievement are quite similar: lack of motivation and lack of persistence. So I'll start by explaining the difference. Lack of motivation is about not seeing sufficient benefit in striving to achieve your goal. You can't see the benefit so why bother? Lack of persistence is where you have identified a benefit but you resist the tasks needed to achieve your goal.

What can you do about lack of motivation? Well, we need to turn that around and ask what can you do about motivation? The secret to motivation is identifying a strong enough reason why you want to reach your goal.

I'd suggest that you take a sheet of paper and list out your reasons. You may want to read my article on effective motivation and goal setting techniques first. Once you've made your list, circle your top three reasons why you want the goal. Then just sit back and spend a few minutes thinking. Do you really know why that goal is important to you? Maybe you'd like more money but why? What would the money do for you? How would you feel?

You also need to be honest with yourself. If you can't identify a burning desire to achieve a goal, why are you trying to achieve it. Life's too short to waste time pursuing goals that have no meaning for you.

LACK OF PERSISTENCE

Lack of persistence is the second of the critical road blocks to goal achievement. There's no doubt that you do need to be persistent - to keep on doing whatever it takes to reach your goal.

However, this doesn't have to be too difficult provided you have identified your motivation for the goal. For example, let's say that you want to double your income and that your plan for achieving this is to start up your own business in addition to your full time employment. Imagine that after an intial burst of enthusiasm you're finding it difficult to put in enough time to develop the business.

What can you do?

The key point is to shift your focus from the tasks in front of you to the benefits you will receive when you achieve your goal. So focus on what the extra income will mean to you. That's a second reason why knowing your motivation is so important.

LACK OF TIME

The key point is to focus your time on the tasks that will bring you more of what you want in life. Are you wasting time on activities like watching hours of television or surfing the net? You may want to read my articles on the power of focus and time management tips.

However, how will you know what to focus your time on if you don't know what's important to you?

So the key to dealing with the critical road blocks to goal achievement is to identify why a goal is important to you and then to keep focused on that reason why in both your thinking and your day to day activities.
