What Is Psycho Cybernetics?

How Can It Help You Achieve Your Goals?

Welcome to the Psychocybernetics page. This part of the web site is about Psycho Cybernetics - and in particular the vital impact that a negative or positive self image has on your success or failure in achieving goals you set.

Psycho Cybernetics is the title of a book written by Dr Maxwell Maltz in 1960. It has become one of the best known self help books, and some 30 million copies have been sold.

What is the background to Psychocybernetics?

How can the principles explained by Dr Maltz help us achieve our goals?

And anyway, why did he choose such a weird name for the book?

First, I'll say a few words about cybernetics. Cybernetics is a field of science developed in the 1940's.

It's concerned with the theory of 'communication and control' in both animals and machines.

By the way, the name 'cybernetics' is related to the Greek word for kybernetes, meaning the steersman of a ship - steering towards the goal.

A key point is that cybernetics looks at systems where actions are influenced by feedback received from the results of prior actions.

In other words, we can learn by our mistakes, or learn as we go.

Let's say that you've set a goal and that you've made some efforts to reach it. You can review your efforts to date and change your game plan. You can put into effect a course correction. Oftentimes you won't reach your goal by heading in a straight line without any hitches along the way. It's more like a zig-zag as you correct your heading now and again.

Psycho Cybernetics is concerned with how people can achieve their goals. In the preface of Psycho-Cybernetics, Maxwell Maltz says that he found most of the answers to people's failure to achieve their goals in the "new science of Cybernetics" - a science concerned specifically with the goal-striving behaviour of mechanical systems.

Based on the idea that our minds act like an automatic goal-seeking machine, Dr Maltz applied the principles of cybernetics to humans.

Hence he added the 'psycho' label to give the name 'Psycho-Cybernetics'.

Psycho-Cybernetics teaches that we humans are natural goal setters and goal achievers.

Once we set a goal, our subconscious mind will get us there.

However, we need to program our mind correctly. How we can do that is what the subject matter of Maltz's PsychoCybernetics book and The New PsychoCybernetics audio program based on the book.
