Dr Maxwell Maltz
Profile Of The Creator Of Psycho-Cybernetics
Welcome to the Maxwell Maltz page. This part of the web site is about psycho cybernetics - and in particular the vital impact that a negative or positive self image has on your success or failure in achieving goals you set.
Dr Maxwell Maltz was the author of PsychoCybernetics, one of the best known self help books ever published. Since 1960, some 30 million copies have been sold. The book was published when he was 61 years of age and already an internationally renowned plastic surgeon. Psychocybernetics is very important for successfully setting and achieving personal goals. So what is the link between Dr Maltz's profession and personal goals? Some 20 years before the publication of Psycho-Cybernetics he wrote New Faces-New Futures, a series of case studies featuring people whose life had changed dramatically for the better after receiving plastic surgery. However, Dr Maltz was struck by the fact that some patients continued to act as if they still bore the 'outer scars' that had now been removed. Why was this? He figured that there was some inner process going on. For some patients, plastic surgery removed both the outer scars and the 'inner scars'. For others, however, these inner scars remained. He came to understand that it was the removal of the inner scars that was the key factor in changing peoples' lives. In Psycho-Cybernetics, Dr Maltz set out the results of the research that he had carried out into the removal of these inner emotional scars. At the core of his theories was the idea of our 'self-image' and its role in helping us achieve our goals. Following the publication of Psycho-Cybernetics Maxwell Maltz became a popular motivational speaker. You can still hear his voice in The New Psycho-Cybernetics audio program, which also features a video of him. He died in 1976, but his influence lives on through the PsychoCybernetics book and the multitude of self help material it has spawned. This includes both self help publications and goals related training programs for sales people and sports stars.
