Inspiration Advice

Understanding Success
And Failure Type Personalities

Welcome to the Inspiration Advice page. This part of the web site is about psycho cybernetics - and in particular the vital impact that a negative or positive self image has on your success or failure in achieving goals you set.

When people asked him for inspiration advice, Dr Maxwell Maltz found one of the most effective strategies was to describe the typical success type personality.

This is not because he expected people to conform to that exact personality. Rather he saw that each of us needs to focus on becoming our unique 'best self'.

However, our 'homing pigeon' servo-mechanism needs a picture of its target, and that is why the picture of the sort of person who might achieve success is useful. CD 4 of The New Psycho-Cybernetics audio program looks at success and failure.

PART 7 - SUCCESS TYPE PERSONALITY

Remember then that Dr Maltz saw these traits as typical of people who achieve the particular success they desire. This is not 'one-size fits all' inspiration advice - just a guideline. He used a seven point list which spelt 'SUCCESS'.

Sense of Direction - you need to set goals
Understanding - the difference between true and false information
Courage - to change, to stumble, to ask, to act
Charity - in helping others we learn to help ourselves
Esteem - build a strong self image
Self Confidence - focus on your successes not failures
Self Acceptance - we are not perfect, just trying to be the best 'us'

So the advice is to develop our own true personality within the guidelines of the success type personality.

PART 8 - RECOGNIZING AND REVERSING SIGNS OF FAILURE

Maxwell Maltz believed that there is also a failure type personality. We can learn to recognise the symptoms and take positive action to correct our course. Again, there is a seven point list - this time spelling 'FAILURE'.

Frustration - exert control by setting new realistic goals
Aggressiveness - understand and channel it in positive ways
Insecurity - build your self image and inner resources
Loneliness - don't isolate yourself, get actively involved
Uncertainty - trust your goal seeking servo mechanism
Resentment - forgive and release the past. Focus on goals
Emptiness - find a challenge to inspire you

As usual, the inspiration advice which Maxwell Maltz offered in psychocybernetics was uplifting but also practical. We are not our mistakes and if we start to see ourselves as failures there is a practical way to improve our self image.
