Using a Goal Setting Worksheet
to Help Achieve Long Term Goals

I believe that using a goal setting worksheet is a vital tool to help most people achieve their long term goals. You can take this idea and test it out. The key is to find a system that works for you.

The Chinese sage Confucius said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.".

Maybe he could have added, "If you walk 10 miles a day for 100 days you will complete a journey of a thousand miles."

If you set a goal to make this thousand mile walk, you could split it down into mini goals for each day - ticking off your goal setting worksheet each day after 10 miles.

Or take a project such as building a web site (like this one) with a large number of articles.

The article you're reading now will be article number 94. My web site project worksheets each cover a period of 28 days - four weeks. Each week I set a target number of articles to write and I mark every article on the sheet.

I also set other regular tasks that I need to carry out. For example:

  • Think up new ideas
  • Read and research on these ideas
  • Keep up to date on how best to build a web site

One of the keys with this sort of task list is to make sure it contains only the most important tasks.

This helps you keep you attention on 'the big rocks' (in Stephen Covey's words) rather than the fine sand.

The point is that it's relatively easy to achieve small goals over a short period of time like a week.

All you have to do to achieve seemingly difficult longer term goals is to keep on repeating your weekly success - one step at a time.

Goal setting templates and worksheets can remind you of regular important tasks for your goals, and also to help you track progress.

You can use goal setting software or paper based templates.
