I have to say that I put off reading this book for a long while, because I knew what the 80/20 principle was about and I didn't see how it would be worth reading nearly 300 pages. However, when I eventually got round to it I discovered that the book really deepened my understanding of how it works in practice - and led me to make much more use of it in my life. Vilfredo Pareto was an Italian economist who found that most of the wealth in nineteenth century England was owned by a minority of the people. The ratio was 20% of people owning 80% of the wealth. When he looked at other countries and times he realised that the same 80/20 ratio applied. Since Pareto's time other researchers have found that 80/20 is very widely applicable. What makes it important to achieving your goals is that 20% of your actions will lead to 80% of valuable outcomes. "The 80/20 Principle" says that we need to overturn the convential wisdom on time and time management. Our problem is that we squander 80% of our time on 'low-value activities'. Think about a goal you want to achieve. How much of your time do you spend in pursuit of your goal? Could you take some different action to achieve your goal more easily?
